Where we work
There are reasons why we work in particular countries and not others and these are mainly historical. In some cases, our long-term development programme arises out of emergency work, while in other cases our experience in one part of the world has led to similar projects being set up in countries with similar needs. Sadly, due to limited resources, we cannot meet all needs.

Iraq, Middle East
After devastating UN sanctions and crippling wars, Iraq is finally in the midst of rebuilding itself. However, the country is still facing a humanitarian crisis, with 500,000 children orphaned. Since 1991, ORFACT has been providing financial support and building orphan centres to house vulnerable children. We have supplied hospitals with bed sheets, towels, anaesthetic trolleys, beds, and various other surgical tools and instruments. So far, we have distributed more than 100 tons of food items, 40 tons of clothes and more than 8,000 pieces of kitchen utensils and oil heaters. Alongside the World Food Programme, we have distributed 15 tons of nourishment biscuits, reaching 8,000 families.

Malawi, Central Africa
Malawi suffered from the worst famine in the country’s history in 2002, leading to the President declaring the country a state of national disaster. A shocking 70% of the population were on the verge of starvation, forced to eat leaves and roots. It was in these desperate conditions that ORFACT helped distribute £10,000 worth of food packages. This was only a temporary lifeline, more was needed.
Darfur, Central Africa
The United Nations declared Darfur to be the "world's worst humanitarian crisis" due to the ongoing civil war which has resulted in thousands dead, massive internal displacement, and the spreading of disease. Hundreds of thousands are living in squalid refugee camps, with a complete lack of access to food and basic health care. ORFACT commissioned a locally built mobilemedical clinic which continues to travel to refugee camps providing free primary health care.
Niger, Central Africa
Droughts and plagues of locusts have added to the already critical situation in Niger. In 2004, the country was facing a famine of disastrous proportions, with three million on the threshold of starvation. Along with local organisations, ORFACT supplied more than 20 tons of essential supplies to severely malnourished children. We helped launch a two-month food distribution program, providing cereal, oil and vegetables to 20,000 families.
This program helped to provide tents and other essentials to set up therapeutic feeding centres for starving children as well as emergency health kits, and 4 tons of ready-to-eat food such as biscuits and porridge. We supplied 500 mosquito nets and kits for rapid malaria testing, as well as re-hydrating salts and water filters.

Bangladesh, Asia
Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated and poorest countries in the world, affected by annual monsoon rain and floods.Children and women are amongst those most at-risk from ill health and malnutrition in Bangladesh. We have addressed this problem by providing free medical care, immunisation, and education services.
In 2004, a debilitating flood hit the country, effectively submerging 60% of the country in water. As a result, a total of 20 million families were in desperate need of emergency aid. In the face of a crisis of such magnitude, ORFACT formulated an emergency relief programme, distributing food, medicine and clothes.
India, Asia
After the Gujarat earthquake in 2001, ORFACT immediately set-up a relief and rehabilitation programme which supplied ambulances, medicine, food, and shelter. We also helped by providing medical equipment, and helped to train impoverished youths and medical staff. In total, we gave £50,000 to the Guajarati people.
2002 saw an outbreak of communal violence in Gujarat, with thousands of people affected by dangerous riots, attacks, and arson. We responded immediately, allocating £30,000 worth of emergency medical aid. We also supplied food parcels and medical supplies, including an ambulance.

Afghanistan, Asia
ORFACT has helped Afghanistan through its devastating droughts and wars, helping the population who were suffering in extremely dire conditions. After decades of civil war and foreign occupation, UNICEF declared the country the most dangerous place to be born.
To help, we have provided 500 tons of food, sheltered thousands, and supplied medical care to refugees stranded in camps near Peshawar.
Sri Lanka, Asia
The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake resulted in 31,000 killed and 1.5 million displaced. 75% of Sri Lanka's boat fleet was damaged or destroyed by the tidal waves. The overall productivity losses have impacted 800,000 workers and their families.
ORFACT helped fund the shipment of more than 2,000 ten-person nets, along with sleeping bags, food, medicines and medical supplies to provide emergency relief to the thousands of families who have lost their homes.
